Brie Larson Replaces Jennifer Lawrence in The Glass Castle

Originally announced in 2012, Lionsgate’s adaptation of Jeanette Walls’ bestselling memoir The Glass Castle has long had Jennifer Lawrence attached to star, but that changes today as The Hollywood Reporter says Brie Larson (TrainwreckThe Gambler) is in talks to replace her as the lead after a crowded dance card of projects and a languishing development forced Lawrence to drop out.
Should the deal go through, The Glass House will mark the first time Larson has reunited with director Destin Cretton after her breakout role in his 2013 indie hit Short Term 12
The 2006 source material is officially described as follows:
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn’t stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an “excitement addict.” Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever. Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town—and the family—Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents’ betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.
Marti Noxon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Fright Night) initially adapted the film’s screenplay with Cretton, with Nicholl Fellowship-winning screenwriter Andrew Lanham performing additional rewrites.
Larson will be seen in theaters next week in the Toronto International Film Festival hit Room, with supporting roles in Legendary’s blockbuster Kong: Skull Island and Todd Solondz’sWelcome to the Dollhouse sequel Weiner-Dog.

The Expendables 4 is on Its Way!

The words of Chumbawamba could easily apply to the career of Sylvester Stallone: “I get knocked down, but I get up again, you’re never going to keep me down.” That’s our roundabout way of letting you know that Variety is reporting that Nu Image and Millennium have just made pre-sales deals with SP International Pictures on behalf of SSXH Beijing and Max Screen Film Distribution to bring us The Expendables 4.
This news comes despite The Expendables 3 only grossing $39 million domestically, which would have made it an out-and-out flop if not for the robust $167 million it took in overseas. Expendables 4 is expected to shoot in 2016 (partly in China) for a 2017 release, although the director and cast have yet been announced, though the trade assures that the all-star action formula will be followed to the letter with a budget north of $100 million. The Expendables franchise features Stallone as mercenary team leader Barney Ross, with kick-ass heavyweights like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Arnold Schwarzenegger making up the core group.
Stallone, who spoke to CraveOnline for the Blu-ray release of The Expendables 3, stated that he blamed the box office disappointment of the threequel on its attempt to reach a wider audience with a PG-13 rating, a mistake he said “won’t happen again.” He also teased that it was probable that a prominent member of the team would kick the bucket in a fourth film.
“It’s is a big conflict for me,” said Stallone. “because in an R-rated film it is difficult to believe that none of the heroes die. I personally just believe that the characters become identifiable and their demise could put a dark cloud over an audience exiting the theatre after seeing the film. But that may change in ‘Expendables 4’…”
Shortly before the failure of The Expendables 3, Millennium also trumpeted plans for an all-female spin-off film titled The ExpendaBelles with Killers and 21 director Robert Luketic brought aboard to helm. Although they were initially targeting big names like Cameron Diaz, Milla Jovovich, Sigourney Weaver and even Meryl Streep(!), there has been no recent movement on the project.

Now they’re working directly with me and our team at Lightstorm in an unprecedented ten-year partnership that’s going to create new stories that will take you deeper into the world of Avatar.”

Throughout the movie and the series, the diverse team of young animals will learn how to utilize each of their unique abilities to solve problems and accomplish tasks to maintain balance within the Circle of Life, while also introducing young viewers to the vast array of animals that populate the prodigious African landscape.

The Education and Science experts at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park serve as consultants, advising on the characteristics, behaviors and habitats of the African animal species featured and inspiring original stories based on their first hand experiences.
Ford Riley (“Special Agent Oso”) developed the movie and series and serves as executive producer. Howy Parkins (“Jake and the Never Land Pirates”) is the director. Christopher Willis (“Mickey Mouse”) is the composer, and Beau Black (“Miles from Tomorrowland”) is singer/songwriter. Author and Swahili expert Sarah Mirza is the language and cultural advisor.

Halt and Catch Fire Renewed by AMC for a Third Season

AMC announced that it has ordered a third season of Halt and Catch Fire, a show that garnered significant critical acclaim in its second season, which shifted focus from building a personal computer to online gaming and communication and the early days of what would become the Internet. Co-creators and writers Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers have been upped to showrunners for the 10-episode third season, which will return to AMC next summer. The series will also debut on AMC Global channels around the world.
“We love what the creative team and cast have been able to deliver on ‘Halt and Catch Fire’ and are particularly grateful to the critics and fans who supported the show throughout the second season and have been pulling for its renewal,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV. “We’re so thankful for the talent and leadership of Jonathan Lisco over these first two seasons and glad that we are able to continue this story with co-creators and showrunners Chris Cantwell and Chris Rogers at the helm. In a world of TV series filled with scary, mythical creatures like zombies and dragons, we’re thrilled to be able to follow these characters to Silicon Valley and finally bring unicorns to television.”
Cantwell and Rogers said: “We are beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to continue telling this story. ‘Halt and Catch Fire’ has been a passion project of ours from day one, and we are so thankful that AMC not only shares this passion, but also continues to champion bold character-driven storytelling in an increasingly crowded television landscape. While we know we would not be here were it not for the leadership and mentorship of former showrunner Jonathan Lisco, we’re incredibly excited to continue working with our wonderful producing partners at Gran Via, as well as our extremely talented cast and crew. Much in the way that ‘Halt’ is about underdogs overcoming convention and breaking new ground, the story of season 3 will endeavor to further stretch the medium and challenge the form.”
From AMC Studios, “Halt and Catch Fire” captures the rise of the PC era in the early 1980s, focused on four main characters attempting to innovate against the changing backdrop of technology and Texas’ Silicon Prairie. The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo (voice of Raymond Ochoa; “The Night Shift,” “Rizzoli & Isles”) makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.
The film’s voice cast will also include Jeffrey Wright (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), Steve Zahn (“Treme,” Saving Silverman), AJ Buckley (“Murder in the First,” “Justified”), Anna Paquin (“True Blood,” “X-Men”), Sam Elliot (“Justified,” The Big Lebowski). Frances McDormand (“Olive Kitteridge,” Fargo), Marcus Scribner (“black•ish”), and Jack Bright (Monsters University).
There are a few more The Good Dinosaur characters that haven’t yet had official images released. At this year’s D23 Expo, Disney fans got an early look at Arlo’s other family members, including Arlo’s Momma and his siblings, Buck and Libby.
A loving wife and mother, Momma (Frances McDormand) is smart and quick-witted. She’s a hard worker with a lot of love for her family, and she keeps her children and their farm in order. Her quiet strength is the backbone of the family.
Buck (Marcus Scribner), meanwhile, is Arlo’s brother. They’re the same age, but Buck is bigger, stronger and a little rambunctious. He likes to tease his fearful brother as often as he can—and Arlo is an easy target. Buck’s size, strength and confidence allow him to do things that Arlo can’t imagine doing—like ripping a tree out of the ground with his teeth.
Libby, finally, is Arlo’s sister and is a capable and willful girl who can plow a mean field. The little trickster has a great sense of humor, and loves playing silly pranks on her family. The actress voicing Libby has not yet been revealed

Tatiana Maslany Joins Jake Gyllenhaal in Boston Bombing Film Stronger

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Emmy-nominated “Orphan Black” actress Tatiana Maslany has entered negotiations to co-star with Jake Gyllenhaal in Lionsgate’s Boston Marathon bombing project titled Stronger, directed by David Gordon Green (George Washington,Pineapple Express).
Based on the non-fiction survivor’s memoir of the same name by Jeff Bauman (with Bret Whitter), Stronger tells Bauman’s story of waiting for his girlfriend to cross the finish line on April 15, 2013 when two pressure cooker bombs exploded killing three and wounding 264. Bauman lost both his legs and became a key witness in the ensuing manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the former having been sentenced to death this past May.
Bauman’s story of recuperation and triumph is being adapted to the screen by writers John Pollono (Sex & Marriage) and Scott Silver (8 MileThe Fighter), and produced by Silver along with David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films.
There is no word on whether Maslany’s casting in Stronger infers that she is out of the running for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, for which she did a chemistry read last weekend.
